Little Girl, Big Boat Syndrome

Photo Copyright: Robin Carleton

Why are there so many people out there paddling boats that are "too big for them"?

I'm 120 lbs, 5'5, paddle a Diesel 80, and absolutely LOVE it. It drives a line, boofs like a dream, resurfaces in little to no time at all, and carries speed amazingly well. I couldn't imagine a better creeker.

According to the "weight range," I should be paddling a Diesel 70. So why… Continue

Lyons Outdoor Games - Steep Creek Race

The South St. Vrain Creek race was quit a unique one for 2010. First, sweltering weather spiked all the CO creeks. Then it rained for 4 days straight, bringing the Narrows race course up to a level that no one wanted any part of. Luckily, the section just upstream of the Narrows was still not too high, although it was pretty pushy. After the 1st run of the course the organizers, safety crew, and some of the racers decided to call it a day because of the burly flows and cold… Continue

2010 Northwest Creeking Competition

This past weekend was the 2010 Northwest Creeking Competition on the East Fork of the Lewis in South-eastern Washington.

Typically, this event takes place on nearby Canyon Creek, Washington, but due to a massive logjam a couple of years ago, the race was moved to the more-friendly, EF Lewis River, about a half hour away. …

How to: The Boof

The Boof is one of the most important things to have in your bag of tricks as a kayaker. It can be used in almost any situation, but in general is a maneuver used when going off a drop or through a rapid, if you want to keep your bow up to go over something your bow would typically go under.

There are three main things to consider when boofing: Approach, Stroke and Body Position, and the Landing.…

Lake Creek, Oregon

March means most rivers in the Willamette Valley are done for in regards to rain, and we have to wait on snow-melt for water. This past weekend, however, we got an unexpected dump which brought the infamous Lake Creek up over 3 ft overnight. It is rare that this river is in past February, so a huge group of us rallied from Eugene to some of the best play features in Oregon.

Mill Creek, WV POV

Mill Creek is one of our local creeks in Fayetteville, WV. It is a relatively fun, mellow creek compared to Manns, Wolf, Keeneys. That being said, Mill still has some serious rapids with high consequences. In February 2010 Mill got rain while all the other creeks in the area received snowfall, so Mill was the only thing running! Mill is roadside, and perfect for multiple laps.

A dual run of Mill Creek Falls:…

Redsides in February!

As we all know, the Northwest is in need of some serious rain. Things are not looking to good for spring runoff.

On the flip side, however, we are fortunate to have so little water that some of the Eugene's summertime play features have come in. This last weekend, Jesse and I made it out to the famous "Redsides," a wave home to the 99' West Coast Team Trials many years… Continue
