Hagen Gorge in Southern Washington

Had a great day of paddling yesterday with Adam Elliott and Bryon Dorr. First sunny day in weeks! The level was a little bit low, but still a super fun day. Hagen Gorge flows into the Washougal River which is just outside Portland, on the Washington side of the Columbia. The Washougal was running near 2000CFS. I'd like tohead back and run the same section when the Washoulgal is at maybe... 4000CFS. Here are photos of Euphoria and Crack in the Earth, the two largest rapids. Euphoria (2nd drop…See More

How to pack your kayak for an overnighter + gear list

How to pack a kayak for an overnighter:First things first, as much love as I have for day runs like Big Kimshew and backyard runs like the Little White Salmon, paddling a kayak down a beautiful river, sleeping next to it and doing the same the next morning - without having to run shuttle or even see a road - is pretty much the most amazing thing I’ve done with my clothes on.I've left out most of the normal kayaking gear, but with this list of gear, I have safely and comfortably completed up to…See More

Gore Canyon at 4g: Remembering the Colorado high water

I hadn't paddled Gore Canyon before. Somehow I had always missed it or just been paddling other things when I was in Colorado. But as the water climbed out of the banks at the Teva Mtn Games and the race was canceled, it was finally time. 4000cfs is an amazing level for sure. Separate rapids become one, it's fast, big and fun.See More

"Yup, mine's all the way back... except when I've got overnight gear in it and I move it forward to attempt to balance things out. I'm 6'2" so I can only move it forward a bit, but it helps. Have fun! Trip"

Epicocity Project's expedition on Nat Geo next Monday!

Last year, EP teamed up with National Geographic Monster Fish guru Zeb Hogan and a pair of Brazilian scientists to explore a remote 400-mile-long river — the River of Doubt (now called the Rio Roosevelt) in southwestern Brazil. Our mission: catch the tuna-sized catfish and paddle the Class V whitewater Teddy Roosevelt first described during his exploration of this Amazon tributary in 1914. Like Roosevelt, we walked away with mixed success, but that's the nature of expeditions--especially in the…See More

"Go figure DOT, who is suppose to be part of public safety, would try enforce the bike path closure due to high water with guys in dry suits and life jackets.......that made me chuckle....some people are just idiots!"

Helmet cam video of swim and rescue on Barrel Springs

Well, I went boating with Andy Maser, Adam Mills Elliott and friends last week in Colorado. Here's video from Barrel Springs rapid on the Colorado river. It's a pretty amazing rapid at high water, but if you flip and get your paddle ripped out of your hands as Adam did, you might swim. This video is all real time from the beginning of the rapid to end of rescue. After we paddled the run we got a talking to from the Department of Transportation. It seems we had used the bike path on the side of…See More

Oh Be Joyful Creek Video

Well, it's already June and the melt has started in Colorado so, I met up with Bryan Kirk, Andy Maser, Todd Baker and Adam Elliot and headed to Crested Butte for a run on Oh Be Joyful creek. Oh Be was at a perfect level, getting better as the snow melted in the afternoon.Check out the video: See More

More than just adrenalin: Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation

Some of the most gratifying moments in my life as a kayaker weren’t just the kayaking.

Successfully completing the lower Congo rapids and coming out with data used by the Museum of Natural History in an area threatened by dam construction was amazing. Helping evolutionary biologist Zeb Hogan document the…
